Can I turn in a letter of resignation and quit my job the same day?
I work for a discount retailer and I want to quit my job. I was originally thinking of turning a resignation letter two weeks before leaving the job. But I don't think that I can stand being there for two more weeks. So, can an employee at a retail job turn in a resignation letter and quit the same day?

- Let's say you never want to use this retailer as a reference. You hate it that bad that you don't even want the retailer on your future job applications. Then I would just quit. -BUT- If you have little to no job experience and have been working for this retailer for at least 6 months, then it is polite and required to give and fulfill a two week's notice. This will allow your previous employer to give a reference. But that depends on your work ethic history with the retailer as well. If you have been insubordinate, that may come back to haunt you on your future job apps. Good luck!
- Can you? yes. They are not going to lock you in the workplace or send someone to your house to drag you to the workplace. If you refuse to work another day, there is nothing that they can do to make you work. Is it a good idea? Not really. Future employers will call and ask them about the circumstances of your departure. If you leave without giving notice, that may make it harder for you to find another job.
- What would be the point of a letter? You won't get a good reference under any circumstances if you walk out. If you really don't think you can stand to be there two more weeks, at least give one weeks' notice.
